MESA recognizes that any person can experience sexual assault, and any person can perpetrate it. However, there are some patterns that emerge from the research done by RAINN so far on sexual assault and violence.


  • Every 98 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted
  • 1 in 6 women will experience sexual assault in her lifetime
  • In Colorado, 1 in 17 men will experience sexual assault in his lifetime
  • Members of the LGBTQ+ community are much more likely to experience sexual violence
  • Experts estimate that under 10% of sexual assaults are actually reported to police

Effects of Sexual Assault

Victims and survivors are

  • 3 times more likely to suffer from depression
  • 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder
  • 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol
  • 26 times more likely to abuse drugs

The Perpetrator

  • 50% of rapists are 30 years old or more
  • 57% are white
  • Perpetrators often have criminal histories; 57% have between 2 and 4 criminal convictions before anyone ever accuses them of sexual assault
